Orchard Hedge Laying. Part 2

The week's hedge laying is complete. We haven't laid the whole length of the hedge because the sap is rising and birds are looking to nest, now it's time to wait until autumn to do the rest. A team of people tackled the good hedge, a thick well grown row of hawthorn, myself and a young chap took on a straggly mess of twisted bushes, big gaps and weedy sticks of hedge with a large willow in it blocking the light and drinking the water.

Here are some photographs of the finished job:

Earlier I said that the hedge contained a large willow yet on the photos is only a small one, this is because we coppiced it.

The coppice stump will soon start throwing up shoots from around its edge and in a couple of years time we will be able to harvest them as withies.

The one thing that is missing on our Midland Bullock hedge is the "heatherings" the twisted binders that run along the top, this is something we will add at a later date. At the moment it looks like a Derbyshire style hedge with the wrong shaped stakes.
