Orchard Tea Making

One of the things anyone needs when they are working hard, hedge laying for instance, is a drink. On a cold day, or even a warm day, a fresh cup of tea or coffee is just the ticket. We all have Thermos flasks but nothing beats the fresh brew, and what if you need hot water for another job like washing up? In the orchard we have a neat solution...

We use a Kelly Kettle, an ingenious device invented in County Mayo, Ireland, in the 1890s by Patrick Kelly who used it when fishing on Lough Conn.  The kettle needs no gas cylinder, camp fire or trivet, everything in self contained. The kettle has a small fire pan onto which sits the actual kettle which is a chimney surrounded by a water chamber. Simply light some tinder in the fire pan, sit the kettle on top and drop grass and twigs down the chimney to make a fire. Within minutes you have boiling water for tea, coffee, soup, washing up and any other task you need hot water for. When you have finished there is no fire damage or smouldering camp fire to worry about.

"Stoking the fire"

Burning nicely and safely; brew's up any minute chaps!
